3 Things Every Small Business Website Needs

Deciding what to include and what to leave out on your business website can be hard! There are so many options for sidebars, plugins, and pages. Let’s talk about three things your site absolutely needs to have if you’re a small business owner.


1. An “About Us” Or “Our Story” Page

One of the cool things about shopping with small businesses is that you get to buy from individuals and families rather than large, faceless corporations. It’s one of the reasons a lot of people choose to shop small— they like the personal feel.


That’s why it’s so important to include a page on your small business’s website that talks about the people behind the product or service. A great “About Us” page will include at least the following information:

  • Owner’s name

  • Year and location the business was founded in

  • What led to the creation of the business

  • Mission statement or purpose of the business

If you want to add extra details about your team members or the history of your business, that’s great! Just make sure you include enough relevant information to give customers an idea of who you are and what you’re about.

2. A Blog

I’m always surprised at how many people think blogs are useless and outdated in this day and age. That couldn’t be farther from the truth! Here’s one of my favorite stats about business blogs:


“Businesses that blog get 55% more website visitors than businesses that don't.”- HubSpot

That’s huge! Your site is much more likely to be found and visited if it includes a regularly updated blog. More site visits and traffic naturally equates to more sales and leads over time.


Blogging sounds a little daunting, but it doesn’t have to be. Here are a few basic blog post ideas for your small business’s website:

  • Seasonal gift guides that feature products you want to highlight

  • Profile posts introducing your staff and team members

  • News about your business (awards received, big goals met, events you’re hosting, etc.)

  • Guest posts from experts in your industry

  • Posts that explain the necessity and benefit of your services or products

Your posts don’t need to be works of literary art. They just need to show customers that you’re knowledgeable, trustworthy, and invested in your business.


3. An FAQ Page

This will save you time as a small business owner, and it’ll make your customers feel more confident in purchasing your products or services. If you’re finding that potential customers or clients are asking you the same questions over and over, take those questions, compile them into a simple FAQ page, and provide the answers.


You’ll spend less time answering repeated questions, which means you’ll have more time to spend on growing your small business. Your customers will have a resource to lean on when they have a quick question, which means they’re more likely to make a purchase. It’s a win-win!
